Gun Digest Book Review
When it comes to understanding, shooting, handloading, and maintaining the .45-70 Springfield Trapdoor, J.S. and Pat Wolf's brilliant book is the Mother Lode of all trapdoor know-how. Forget everything you've ever read about reloading the .45-70 cartridge for the Trapdoor. Through years of meticulous research, the Wolf's have recreated all of the U.S. military black powder, duplex and smokeless loads for the carbine and rifle. What's more they recreated the proper 405 gr. hollow base bullet mould, five piece die set, and flash hole drill necessary to make those "Old Warhorses" shoot and make this tooling available to us at very reasonable prices.
But the Wolf's book is more than just a clear guide to handloading the Trapdoor. It's a detailed guide to the complete management of the Springfield. Ever wonder about the proper settings for the 1884 Buffington and 1879 rear sights and how to calibrate them for your handloads? Or what level of accuracy the Dept. of Ordnance expected from original Trapdoors? Or how to make a superb bullet lube from olive oil and beeswax? Or how to utilize original Trapdoor tools and accessories? It's all here, plus selected reprints of original Ordnance documents. Buy this book!

GUN DIGEST
I recently purchased your great book and am slowly working my way through it. I find myself concentrating as much as I used to in college, a looong time ago.
I started out in the book but jumping here and there getting the highlights, but am now giving it a serious read to ground myself in the principles before jumping into reloading black powder.
I would like to say that I've been interested in shooting for over 50 years and have in that time come across a lot of "experts" who often misled me when I was younger, and as the years progressed I learned to tune out the bs artists. Your book is like a breath of fresh air. There can actually be intelligent, articulate, and insightful people in this sport. I have have really valued the quotes at the start of each chapter. Those, and the quality and clarity of writing have already got me thinking of Spencer with regret as one of those persons who got away before I had a chance to meet him. Your book at this time in my life has been a real find. Thank you. Best Wishes, Dave Parks

I was both surprised and pleased to find, when I received this book, that it had been signed bt Pat Wolf. Not only did Pat dedicate the book and sign it for me, she also hand wrote well wishes and signed my receipt thanking me for my order. Now that's a sign of appreciation from a dedicated small business owner that seems to be in very short supply these days. I will continue to do business with Pat Wolf as she is carrying on a "Labor of Love" begun by her husband Spencer and I will provide all of the support as a customer I am able to help her in that endeavour. The book represents a wealth of both research and personal information about reloading 45-70 cartridges with blackpowder for those of us who appreciate tradition and strive to keep it alive! A book no 45-70 black powder cartridge reloader should be without!

5.0 out of 5 stars You need this for reloading 45-70!

I originally bought this book, (First Edition) about 32 years ago. Either rats or mice destroyed my books in storage and this was one of them. I've just recently bought the third edition as I need to load black powder 45-70's for my Sharps. Do you want to know "why" you can't put 70 grains of black powder in a modern cartridge like the old timers did? Do you want to know how to trickle charge with a "drop tube", or how to "compress" black powder? Then, you need this book!

I received this well packed book in a timely fashion. The copy is signed by the author, who with her late husband, researched what it takes to create loads for the Springfield .45-70 rifle and carbine and properly shoot these firearms to obtain the accuracy of the original factory loads.
