Since the title of the book is a bit long we just refer to it as "The Book".
Loading Cartridges for the Original .45-70 Springfield Rifle and Carbine by J.S and Pat Wolf, 3rd edition, spiral bound to lay flat. This is the book that brought the Trapdoor out of the closet and into the winner's circle at the black powder single shot rifle matches. J.S. and Pat spent 3 years researching original military sources from the 1800's to learn how the 45-70 cartridge was loaded at the arsenals. Every load was developed with modern components and range tested for accuracy. Details are given for various rifle and carbine loads as well as cleaning instructions, history of the cartridge and firearm, and a complete chapter on using the original military sights. If you shoot the original Springfield Trapdoor, this book is for you.
Do you have a .45-70 Springfield and wish you could hit the black circle of the target even at 50 yards?? Have you been to a match and witnessed a .45-70 take all the 1st place trophies? When you asked the proud winner how did he/she get that kind of accuracy, they may have told you they bought a book called "Loading Cartridges for the Original .45-70 Springfield Rifle and Carbine" by J.S. and Pat Wolf. Maybe you are simply wondering if there is a better way to load for accuracy and enjoyment while shooting the .45-70. If any of the above describes why you are here, you are on your way to learning how to make the "old Warrior" shoot with accuracy that wins matches and fills the freezer with meat.
Until I stumbled upon the Wolf's book, I had never been able to get a mint condition 1888 Springfield Rifle to shoot anywhere accurately! For anyone shooting the Trap Door Springfield, this book is an absolute must. For anyone interested in how the Frankford Arsenal used to make the .45-70 ammo and the improvements thereof, the book is essential. The book has helped me win more than a few bets from people who doubted the Trap Door's ability to shoot accurately. Although J.S. passed away several years ago the book is a fitting memorial to his memory and his efforts to resurrect the long lost knowledge of making the ammo for the Trap Door that allows it to shoot with great accuracy.

RECIPE
ONE PART = 1⁄4 POUND BY WEIGHT. (I use a postage scale I bought at Office Depot)
6 Parts BeesWax
1 Part Murphie’s Oil Soap
1 Part Pure Neats Foot Oil (PURE Neats Foot Oil, NOT Neats Foot Oil Compound) 1 Medium sized eye dropper Peppermint Oil (helps make lube more pliable without lowering melting temperature)
1 Part LubeGard.
Melt wax in double boiler, add other ingredients and mix well. Do not allow to boil. If you want lube to be more resistant to ambient temperature (as in the hot summer time) increase the proportion of wax. Pour into mould (I use cheap flexible plastic ice cube trays). FOR DOMESTIC TRANQUILITY IT IS STRONGLY SUGGESTED YOU GO TO WAL MART AND GET YOUR OWN DOUBLE BOILER.
In case you are wondering. The Peppermint Oil helps keep the lube pliable without lowering its melting point, or so I’ve been told.
